Inhalt | Contents This course presents a monetary history of Switzerland in the 19th and 20th centuries. At present, the Swiss Franc is soaring and full of vitality. Yet in 1850, when it first came into being, nobody would have predicted that it would become one of the most successful and strongest currencies in the world over the course of the 160 years to follow. Indeed, it took over 50 additional years to create a central bank (SNB, 1907) and the Swiss Franc developed over at least three international monetary regimes (gold standard, Bretton Woods and the current flexible exchange rate system) to its present status. Beyond this, Swiss monetary history provides valuable insights into a number of issues remaining of great interest even today. The organisation of monetary institutions and its development over time shape the structure of financial markets and affect the economic course of a country in important ways. In particular, we will discuss the performance of the Swiss Franc in a monetary union (Latin Monetary Union), at the foreign exchange markets, in money markets (the "Swiss interest island"), as well as money demand and supply and the importance of the financial sector for the development of the Swiss economy since the late 19th century. |
