| Inhalt | Even though Uganda is one of the smaller countries in Africa, it is rich in terms of cultural diversity. With more than 30 ethnic groups it features an array of languages, religions, aesthetic practices and social and political traditions. As with most African countries, the national borders do not reflect the long history of connection, migration and shared identities with societies living in the neighboring states, the region and even beyond the Indian Ocean. Political unrest and civil war however also have left their marks on Uganda’s contemporary society and often are explained as results of ethnic rivalries and incomplete de-colonization. In the Seminar, we will read older and recent ethnographies of Uganda. With selected case examples, we will look more closely at ethnographic aspects such as political systems, music, youth, language, pastoralism, or urban life earlier in history and today, and we will ask how they contribute to contemporary understandings of ethnicity. |
| Lernziele | - The students are able to name major ethnic groups in Uganda and describe their cultural particularities. - The students are familiar with the history of Uganda in pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial times and can relate aspects of social and cultural change to the historical and regional context. - The students are able to critically conceptualize ethnicity as both, a theoretical concept and part of social practice and politics. |
