| Inhalt | Masterplan Africa African urbanization is usually considered through the lens of spontaneity and emergence. Processes of everyday invention, shaped by inhabitants’ creativity and resourcefulness, are indeed central to understanding urban dynamics across Africa today. By celebrating the informal, however, observers tend to neglect the role which master plans, and their complex after-lives, play in both the history and the future of cities on the African continent. This course will explore how African cities are shaped by the unintended consequences, and sometimes the intentions, of masterplans. From colonial-era monumental designs and plans for segregated cities to the planning of railway infrastructure, transnational highways, and new capital cities, Africa is hardly devoid of masterplans, whether they are realized or have remained unbuilt. In addition to seminar discussions based on critical readings, students in the course will assemble and analyze a selection of masterplans, and examine their role in the subsequent development cities and territories. These analyses will be assembled in a booklet, which constitutes the final product of the course. |
