| Inhalt | This course will consider the basic nature of the banking firm. After characterizing banks as payments system custodians and financial intermediaries, the class will explore how instability in banks arises from the presence of demand debt and the highly leveraged nature of banks' balance sheets. We examine legal strategies for mitigating this instability, including regulation of the business of banking; deposit insurance and moral hazard; and capital adequacy regulation. The class will conclude with an in-depth investigation of the subprime mortgage disaster and the financial crisis of 2008-2009. |
