| Inhalt | In this research seminar, we will examine “the body” as a historically and culturally contingent category, a research object as well as a research subject, a material locus of practices and an object of fashioning and self-identification. How has the body been made a topic of anthropological research? What do studies of the body tell us about anthropology and its changes over the past decades? In what ways have these perspectives been influence by other disciplines? What fields of material practice – eating, doing sports, aging, medical procedures, forms of subjectivity - produce contingent forms of embodiment? In this course we will address these and other questions through close readings, presentations and discussions of key texts as well as seminar papers. |
| Lernziele | The students gain an overview of current research on the body from anthropological perspectives. They learn to critically reflect diverse theoretical approaches to and empirical case studies of "mindful bodies" and embodiment. |
