| Inhalt | The current situation in Australia is highly contradictory: on the one hand there is this huge hype for Aboriginal paintings on the global art market on the other hand Aborigines still live on the edge of third world conditions in this first world country. Although Aboriginal culture in Australia is one of the oldest in the world with over 40,000 years of presence, it was defined as non-existing - terra nullius - by the first Western discoverers in the 18th century. This led to an incredibly difficult general situation in Australia that still today has not been overcome. In this seminar we have a closer look at Aboriginal culture: cave paintings giving information about early settlements, stories from the Dreaming telling about the creation of Australian landscapes and art centres as contact zones between Westerners and Aborigines, dealing with Aboriginal culture today. However, we are discussing as well colonial history, land right questions and political and social issues from today. A part from literature we also include films in this seminar and there is the possibility given to work with objects from the collection of the Museum der Kulturen Basel. |

| Teilnahmevoraussetzungen | Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 30 Personen beschränkt. Die Plätze werden nach Anmeldedatum und Studienfachzugehörigkeit vergeben. Vorrang haben die Studierenden der unter "Module" aufgelisteten Studienfächer/-gänge. |
