Inhalt | Public finance, public economics or public sector economics are interchangeable terms to describe the subfield of economics that analyzes the role of government in a market economy. Government intervention is generally justified by market failure due to four broadly defined reasons: Externalities and public goods, decreasing cost production, asymmetric information and distributional concerns. Due to the limited time available, we will focus on select applications to provide intuition about a subset of topics within the field of public economics. In the first part of the course, we develop the main results from expenditure theory using a general equilibrium model, with a special focus on externalities. The second part of the course focuses on optimal taxation and redistribution. For more details, please consult the syllabus, which is available on ADAM and on the WWZ's website. |
Lernziele | The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of the role of government policy in a market economy, and of the main challenges that arise in the context of the regulation of externalities and generating government revenue. Students become acquainted with a series of modeling approaches suited for different contexts, based on textbooks and selected papers published in the public economics literature. |
