Inhalt | The seminar explores the potential of landscapes as archives. The seminar, hence, discusses two key concepts in human geography and history respectively and wants to bring them into conversation. In the seminar we first engage with different theoretical concepts of landscape ranging from a material to a discursive understanding of the term. In natural science, for instance, landscape is primarily understood as an objectifiable entity that can be decoded, measured, and mapped whereas in the humanities and social sciences (e.g. Cosgrove, Harvey) landscape is increasingly defined as a distinctive way of representing and making space, and is thus understood rather as a verb than a noun (Mitchell). The seminar does not privilege a specific conception of landscape but, based on a reading of David Harvey, rather aims for a careful consideration of different approaches and their inherent theoretical and practical implications. Irrespective of how landscape is conceptualised, materially or discursively, landscape is always subject to change: Natural processes (geological processes, climate, etc) and human interactions (agriculture, settlements, mining, etc) leave physical traces in the landscape. Whereas changing regimes of representations (e.g. paintings, maps or story-telling) generate new and often competing discursive landscapes. In other words, we can understand landscapes as archives storing information that allows for reconstructing narratives of the past. In a second step, hence, the seminar tries to read and listen to narratives lodged in landscapes. In this second part of the seminar, the participants also work with empirical data (e.g. maps, visuals, literature) in order to practically apply and test out their theoretical findings. The seminar is offered in conjunction with the interdisciplinary research project Space in Time: Landscape narratives and land management changes in a Southern African cross-border region and the empirical data used in the seminar relates to the project. |
