| Inhalt | When looking at the physical environment in the African context, much of the discourse tends to focus on aspects of informality. While the impact of the informal on cities such as Nairobi or Lagos might be substantial, this perspective obfuscates the extent and influence of formal planning on the African continent from the colonial period until today. This lecture course will give an overview, show case-studies of this extensive planning, and investigate their implications. Structured according to spatial and functional typologies, the lectures will speak about planned cities, infrastructure systems or specific building typologies, bringing the (master-) plans in relation to the political and social dynamics of their time, to show how much of Africa was planned. |
