Inhalt | Historically, the Central African region has played a central role in the theoretical and methodological developments in anthropology and continues to be a locale for anthropological research of major importance. This course is designed to provide students with a critical anthropological perspective on the historical, political, economic, and cultural processes shaping the everyday lives of peoples in central Africa. In examining some of the classical anthropological literature on this region, as well as case studies by contemporary anthropologists, students will be able to appreciate some of anthropology’s central themes, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the region’s challenges and its place in the world. Through discussions of the assigned readings, films and in-class group presentations, students will explore the analytical links between issues of anthropological interest such as gender, sexuality, kinship, ethnic relations, religion, witchcraft, among others, as highlighted in ethnographies of small-scale local communities and the wider historical and political contexts in which they are embedded, namely, colonialism and its legacy, globalization and neoliberalism. |
Lernziele | Students will: • be exposed to a wide breadth qualitative research conducted in central Africa • learn to deconstruct and engage with classical anthropological literature based on this region • gain an understanding of the broader colonial underpinnings • acquire an awareness of the new conjectures in contemporary studies of central Africa |
