| Inhalt | Drawing on the BABs colonial photo archives, we invite selected students for a Praktikum dealing specifically with photographic negative series and their direct prints (contact sheets). Negative series and contact sheets are neglected and underrated media in visual studies whilst forming the base of most 20th century photographic archives. Participants are required to engage with the actual processes of producing, archiving and researching negative series. First sessions have a strong practical focus whilst follow-up sessions discuss methodological approaches to the materiality of image archives and, in particular, aspects of seriality, next to and visual communication conventions between “white” photographers and African protagonists in colonial contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase research results with respect to particular negative film series and/or contact sheet images. The Lehrveranstaltung will integrate the expertise of a photographer, photo archivist and photo curator. |
