Inhalt | The course deals with: - the problems of classifying and defining the relation between Islam and political ideas or movements: What is the meaning of “Islamism”, “Salafism”, “Fundamentalism”, and “political Islam”? - different socio-political explanations of the phenomena that are subsumed under the category of “Islamism”. - the main ideas, the diversity, and the actors of “Islamist” movements as well as the opponents of “Islamism”. - the social and political background of some selected “Islamist” movements and their intellectuals. - the transnational character of “Islamism” and its connection to mobility. |
Lernziele | The students - learn about the importance and problems of scientific classifications. - are encouraged to critically reflect on biases inherent in the uses of the term “Islamism” and in the narratives that are offered to explain “Islamism”. - acquire an overview of the variety of movements subsumed under the category of “Islamism”. - acquire the ability to view the socio-political conflicts behind “Islamism”. - learn to take into account transnational contexts and mobility when trying to understand the phenomena that are subsumed under the category of “Islamism”. |

Bemerkungen | The course begins with the two sessions on Friday, 22 February 2019 (14:15-17:45), and on Friday, 8 March 2019 (14:15-17:45). The two reaming dates for the block seminar on a Friday afternoon (14:15–17:45) and a following Saturday morning (9:30–13:30) take place in April and May and will be scheduled during the course.
