Inhalt | The Iranian Revolution 1978/79 is widely considered a defining historical watershed and epoch-making event in the 20th century. The sudden overthrow of the authoritarian government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi surprised politicians, diplomates and the general public, in particular since Ayatollah Khomeini established an Islamic Republic dramatically highlighting the relevance of Islamism in the Middle East and beyond. The EUCOR Seminar – offered by Professor Tim Epkenhans (Freiburg) and Professor Maurus Reinkowski (Basel) – discusses the global political trajectories, in which the Iranian Revolution was embedded, such as the transformation of political Islamism, the economic globalization and integration of the Middle East, the preponderance of post-colonial thinking in intellectual debates or the context of the “Cold War”. Instead of a “national” perspective on the Iranian Revolution, the seminar focusses on its global historical perspective. |
Lernziele | Students will acquire a thorough understanding of the Iranian Revolution, its historiographical interpretations and its wider-reaching impacts on the Muslim world and beyond. |
