Inhalt | In this seminar we will discuss the fundamental issues of how time is encoded in language. This concerns the function of tense, aspect and modality markers (the so-called TMA-system of a language) and their interaction with temporal adverbials and conjunctions. Further aspects of the linguistic encoding of time concern metaphor and metonymy, especially their relationship to space. A second focus is on the temporal organization of larger texts (e.g. narratives). The students are then encouraged to elaborate a project of their choice (e.g. spatial metaphors for time and their crosslinguistic differences; first or second language acquisition of temporal relations and the TMA system). |
Lernziele | Students will learn how time and temporal relations can be encoded in language, and learn about theoretical approaches that highlight different aspects of the topic area. They are encouraged to explore the relationship between textual organisation and linguistic markers of TMA in a dataset of their choice. |
