Inhalt | Iran and Turkey show some remarkable similarities in their reform policy in the twenthieth century. Both countries were subordinated in the 1920s and 1930s by their respective rulers, Shah Reza Pahlavi (1878-1944) and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), to a systematic policy of authoritarian reform policy that aimed to "modernize" and "secularize" their societies. We will discuss, after a set of introductory units into the historical background, the ambivalent outcomes of this venture. |
Lernziele | Students will acquire a thorough understanding of the massive reform processes in both Iran and Turkey in the 1920s and 1930s, will be able to critically reflect on the concept of authoritarian modernization and to understand the effects of this policy up to the present in both countries. |
