| Inhalt | In this course, students will acquire a basic understanding of the nature of the English language as a linguistic system. We will first study the English sound system (phonetics and phonology). In that context we will focus on the origin and use of vowels, diphthongs and consonants. Then we will go on to word and sentence stress and intonation and learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Further, we will explore the nature and structure of English words (morphology) and how words combine to form longer units such as clauses, phrases and sentences (syntax). |

| Literatur | Bieswanger, Markus; Becker, Annette (2017): "Introduction to English Linguistics". 4th Edition. Tübingen: Narr. (Participants should buy the book in advance). Additional texts might be distributed in the course of the semester. |
| Bemerkungen | Nur für Studierende des Studiengangs Lehrperson Sekundarstufe I der FHNW. Modulcode: FW.EN.1.1. This course will take place in Zoom (and other online formats) during the designated time slot. There will also be periods of self-study, online group discussions, and question times. |
