Inhalt | We will present some basic notions of Algebraic Statistics, a domain where problems from applied mathematics and statistics are studied using techniques from Algebraic Geometry. This means describing and modelling statistical problems with tools from Algebraic Geometry. We will introduce selected topics from Algebraic Geometry (algebraic sets, varieties of polynomials and their ideals, Gröbner basis, etc.), some elements from geometric probability (probability polytopes, fitness/viability landscapes) and some current applications of Algebraic Statistics (from Biology, Medicine and Economics). |
Lernziele | The main aim of the course is to introduce students to some mathematical tools useful for solving concrete problems by using algebraic techniques. There will be a follow-up course in FS 2021 organized in seminars where we will consider problems, use cases, which come out from industry. |
Literatur | - “Algebraic Statistics for Computational Biology”; Lior Pachter and Bernd Sturmfels (2010) - “Algebraic Statistics”; Seth Sullivant, (2018) - “Algebraic and Geometric Methods in Statistics”; Paolo Gibilisco, Eva Riccomagno, Maria Piera Rogantin, Henry P. Wynn (2010) Additional notes will be given during the lectures. |
Bemerkungen | There will be no exercise session. Some exercises will be discussed in the lectures. There will be tutoring/background sessions given by Dr. Philipp Mekler. |
Teilnahmevoraussetzungen | Basic notions of algebra, essentially those required for understanding algebraic manipulations of polynomials. Basic notions of Statistics. The course is suitable for all students in the quantitative-scientific domain. |
