Inhalt | Property is more than a mere technical or legal term. In the 1960s, anthropologist Max Gluckman defined property as a social and political relation. In anthropology, property is a transversal topic located at the crossroads of the sub-disciplines of legal anthropology, political anthropology, economic anthropology, and environmental anthropology. Land and property can be fruitful entry points to explore past and contemporary debates in the discipline and beyond. How do land and property relate to colonialism and neoliberalism? Can the concepts of land and property allow us to challenge and deconstruct dichotomies such as individual vs. collective, public vs. private, rural vs. urban, formal vs. informal? In this proseminar, we explore the concepts of land, property, and belonging by reading key anthropological texts on these topics, as well as by looking into specific case studies from the global North and the global South. We will gain insights into a variety of sub-topics such as housing and evictions, urban governance, natural resources management, large-scale land acquisitions, or land reforms. |
