Inhalt The Lecture Series with panel discussions exposes students to different schools of thought and concrete interventions that redefine understandings of the urban in the twenty-first century. This lecture series will explore and debate the different dynamics that shape cities and how cities in turn impact the course of locally situated and global phenomena. Additionally, panel discussions will prep and coach students to engage and moderate a debate with invited guest lecturers across disciplines addressing current debates in Urban Studies. The speakers will be invited in pairs from different disciplines and fields in the social sciences; urban and regional planning; geography; political theory; art and activism; and architectural research.
Lernziele This course has two interrelated objectives. First, students will learn how to engage with urban experts and their specialized fields, drawing out the implications of different disciplinary approaches to the urban, which assist students in developing an in-depth critical understanding of the contemporary theories, practices and discourses in Urban Studies. Second, this format is designed to help student gain more confidence and experience in talking about urban theories and practices. With this understanding and experiences students will be more equipped to link, discuss and argue about urbanity with all its cultural, social, political, and historical contexts.

Hinweise zur Prüfung Assessment for this course is based on three pillars: preparation/moderating of the panel sessions, attendance, and participation. Students must prepare and moderate (in a group of 5-6) one lecture/panel per group and attend all prepping/coaching sessions, lectures/panel discussions. If you know you will be absent for more than one lecture/panel or prepping/coaching, please contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss your options. More than one excused absence of any of the sessions will not allow you to receive the credit points for this course. Furthermore, participation means more than simple attendance: your engagement and involvement in the Q&A and panel sessions following the lectures and discussions with the invited speakers should reflect your active listening during lectures and engaged reading of the texts assigned for each lecture.
