62217-01 - Übung: Visualizing Urban Research (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2021
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Thomas Betschart (thomaschristian.betschart@unibas.ch)
Alaa Dia (alaa.dia@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course provides an overview of common research methods used in the field of urban studies. The aim of the course is twofold:
a) to learn how to work with different mapping and visualization software as well as to
b) collect and transform raw field data through a design process into visual representations, using that software. The course focuses on understanding and presenting the urban environment through various sources. As the semester progresses, the emphasis will shift from familiarizing oneself with the methods towards students’ own field research projects, where they will have the chance to collect various qualitative and spatial data from their field of research. Through the use of representation tools (drawing, photography, audio recordings, graphics and the production of text), students will present and transform observations as well as the impressions and ideas that they have made at urban sites of their choice.
The course is organized in a workshop/field survey format, supplemented by theoretical seminars and skill-developing sessions. Work for the class includes class participation/discussion and field visits. It is designed to help students think more deliberately and scientifically about their methodological approaches and visual-production skills as they design and carry out social research.
Lernziele - Gain practical design skills, for an introduction to key topics in urbanism, which includes digital design practice and familiarity with Adobe Suite, 3D modelling, and architectural tools.
- Present various tools and methods of visual representations. How to represent urban environments based on field observation via maps and diagrams.

Bemerkungen Unfortunately, this course is only open for students within the Critical Urbanisms Master program and a maximum of 24 students will be accepted by the lecturers.

This course is in-person class.
