| Inhalt | In this working group (Arbeitsgemeinschaft), students will work together to develop a better understanding of collective violence and political violence in the Middle East. The time period covered by the working group spans the late nineteenth century to the present day. Students will meet with the instructor in six sessions; the first session will define the aims of the working group and establish working definitions for key terms. The other five sessions will address various categories of collective violence: interethnic violence, state violence, paramilitary violence, terrorism and insurgency, and civil war and revolution. In addition to general literature on collective violence in the Middle East, students’ readings will be guided by their own research interests and case studies. By compiling, reading, and comparing recent literature on collective violence in the Middle East, students will explore the origins of collective violence, the slipperiness of classification and naming, violence legitimation strategies, and the comparability of collective violence in the Middle East, among other topics. |
| Lernziele | Students will -- work together to develop questions and concepts regarding collective violence -- probe these questions using selected case studies from the Middle East -- familiarize themselves with and develop a critical approach to the current literature -- practice presenting on academic topics in English |
| Bemerkungen | This working group will meet on the following Wednesdays between 16.00-19.00: 22 September, 6, 13, 20, 27 October, 3 November Participation in the first session on 22 September is mandatory. Because of space restrictions, this working group is initially limited to 7 participants. Should the situation allow it, the course will be expanded. Students from Near & Middle Eastern Studies and Changing Societies have priority. |
| Teilnahmevoraussetzungen | This is a working group offered at the master's level. Participation requires the ability and willingness to read relatively large amounts of scholarly literature in English. A familiarity with the geography and history of the Middle East is also assumed. |
