Dozierende Veit Arlt (veit.arlt@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The Second European Conference in African Studies (SESCAS) is a project developed by students from both the African Studies Master of the University of Basel as well as that of the University of Geneva. SESCAS aims to increase the exchange among master students from the African Studies programs at a European level. It incites critical discussion and the creation of networks within Switzerland and Europe.
The project started in the autumn semester 2021, when students were introduced in the basic elements of organizing a conference. The course participants then organised themselves in dedicated teams with responsibilities such as communication, administration, fundraising etc, defined a conference theme, designed a call for papers which has been circulating Europe-wide from mid-November 2021 with a deadline for submission of proposals on 5 January 2022, and established a Scientific Committee.
While the first semester was dedicated to the development of the project, the emphasis in the spring semester will be marked by operational issues, translating the ideas into practice. Students continue to work on their own coached by members of faculty in African Studies.
At the core of this conference project is a deep and intense learning experience based on total immersion in a challenging enterprise – the conceptualization and planning of an academic conference including all elements and aspects of such an endeavor from A to Z:
• Building a team with different bodies (organizing committee, program committee, support staff) assisted by an advisory board
• Identifying a theme and/or core issues to be discussed
• Phrasing a call document
• Assembling the program committee and defining selection criteria
• Raising funds
• Communication, advertising and media relations
• Organizing the program, venue and side-activities
• Serving as host, panel chair, discussant, moderator, facilitator
• Reporting and evaluating
Lernziele Learning how to organise an academic event.
