| Inhalt | In recent years, new transnational movements for social justice have emerged that challenge multiple forms of oppression. One example is the Black Lives Matter movement, which has brought together millions of people worldwide in their opposition to systemic racism and police violence. But these transnational networks of activism and solidarity are not a new phenomenon. In the aftermath of World War 2, the emergence of Afro-Asian solidarity, tricontinentalism and the Third World produced new transnational networks of solidarity that envisioned a radical reconfiguration of the world. In Europe, anti-colonialism and Third World solidarity were at the core of new political visions and practices of the alternative left from the 1960s. In this seminar we will focus on transnational networks of solidarity during the second half of the 20th century. We will examine the rise and the idea of the Third World, discuss the role of the GDR and other socialist countries in fostering international solidarity, and ask how the anti-apartheid struggle shaped new forms of collective action that transcended national boundaries. What were the political visions that emerged, how was solidarity experienced and lived in everyday life and what were the limitations of transnational solidarity are some of the questions the seminar will address. |
