Inhalt | This course examines the role of popular culture within gendered and racialized narratives of militarism, terrorism and aid, with a particular focus on its impact on political and societal processes. Through a combination of cultural studies and political science, the course explores how modes of governance are reflected in contemporary culture, whereby culture reveals the relationships between the production and circulation of power. The course is divided into three thematic blocks of militarism, terrorism and aid. Students will critically examine how the security-development nexus is embedded in cultural discourses, thereby looking at cultural products such as movies, music, literature that shape our gendered and racialized understanding of international relations. As part of the course evaluation, students are invited to present their own case studies that disclose the intimate relationship between culture and politics in the context of international relations. |

Hinweise zur Prüfung | The course conveners evaluate participants through attendance rate, group presentations and a submitted class paper at the end of the course. In the first session, participants have to form three groups and choose one out of the three topics: militarism, terrorism and aid. Groups have to prepare a presentation on the topic moderated by class discussion. The goal is to choose three cultural artifacts that are put in relation to each other and illustrate the gendered and racialized understandings of militarism, terrorism and aid produced in popular culture. In the assigned class paper (approx. 1000 words), the students are expected to put their findings in relation to the relevant literature. |
