66225-01 - Seminar: Transforming Societies: the Potential of Current Sustainability Concepts to Address Relevant Leverage Points (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2022
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Antonietta Di Giulio (antonietta.digiulio@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Not every change is a transformation, and not every suggestion for how to change society has a transformative potential. In recent years, different concepts have been developed that aim at a comprehensive sustainable transformation of societies. Such concepts are, e.g., "doughnut economics", "environmental space", "safe and just operating space", or "consumption corridors". They have in common that they do not suggest singular policies or interventions and that they do not focus only on the behavior of individuals. Rather, they claim to ground a comprehensive transformation of societies. In the seminar, these concepts will be discussed and compared with a view to their suitability to actually change societies. For this purpose, the concept of leverage points and the concept of frame reflection will be used as a heuristic frame, and domains such as food, mobility or housing will be used as examples of application (domains will be determined collaboratively with the students). Students will get familiar with transformative concepts (such as "doughnut economics", "environmental space", "safe and just operating space", "consumption corridors") and they will discuss their potential by applying the concept of leverage points and the concept of frame reflection.
Lernziele The students know heuristic frames that can be used for a critical examination of the depth and scope of the societal transformation that can be achieved by suggestions for how to achieve societal change.
The students know transformative concepts that aim at a comprehensive sustainability transformation of society and that are currently discussed in the scholarly debate and beyond.
The students are able to anticipate, reflect and discuss the concrete societal impacts of implementing different transformative concepts (using exemplary sectors and fields of action).
The students are able to compare the potential of transformative concepts to actually transform societies.
