| Inhalt | Pregnancy and childbirth are rites of passage into new spheres of self-construction and self-conception. At the same time, this transition to new identity is characterized by social and biological vulnerabilities as well as by bioethical complexity. Pregnancy and childbirth come with a series of responsibilities, for example, towards the pregnant person, the birthing person, the fetus, the family, and the professionals. In this lecture series we will be guided by international experts through contemporary examples of ethical issues surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. These include but are not limited to decision-making in birth, autonomy and informed consent in birth, informal coercion in birth, choice of place of birth, relationality of the birthing person, migrants’ access to obstetric care, and respectful maternity care. We deliberately look at pregnancy and birth from various angles, since – as Kukla (2009) puts it – any empirical and conceptual exploration of ethical issues of pregnancy and birth “must be guided by a rich understanding of women's agency and its placement within a complicated set of cultural meanings and pressures surrounding birth”. Most lectures will take place on Mondays from 12:15 to 13:45. If the sanitary situation allows, we will have all in person sessions according to the university of Basel current regulation. Lectures take place in Hörsaal 2, Klinikum 1, Universitätsspital (Spitalstrasse). Joining over Zoom for in-person lectures is available for participants who have exceptional reasons and cannot participate in-person. Please let us know if you cannot participate in-person for these sessions, otherwise students are expected to arrive on-site. | Lernziele | Upon the completion of this course, you will be familiar with ethical issues surrounding pregnancy and birth and have a better understanding of the underlying reasons (e.g. socio-cultural, political, legal, and medical contexts along with respective norms, narratives, and power structures). |
