Inhalt | The course takes place over the first two weeks at the University of Cape Town. The first week coincides with the university’s official orientation, while the second week is built around a number of site visits. The course covers a range of themes that are relevant to understand in the contemporary South African environment, such as questions of racial inequality, environmental crisis and local politics. In January, students will be provided with the detailed syllabus and a reader that comprises short and accessible readings, which give more detailed insights into the specific topics discussed during the site visits. The readings are a selection of popular contemporary non-fiction and fiction that engage in varied ways with the complexity and contradictions of South African cities and society. |
Lernziele | Contemporary South African Debates orients students to issues that shape South African cities and the nation itself. It explores debates that shape our understanding of apartheid, democracy, and the possibilities and limits of transformation and decolonization. The block course is built on a mix of fieldtrips, discussion sessions, and readings. Each site visit includes a small task, which link back to the readings and inform the reflection session after each visit. The course provides students with a creative space to start to experiment with methods for observing and engaging the city through writing, mapping, and audio and visual techniques. As a final course assignment, students produce a panel of 3 annotated key words and a creative map/spatial visualisation. |
