Inhalt | ‘Global South’ as a critical concept was traditionally used within intergovernmental development organizations to refer to economically disadvantaged nation-states, a post-cold war alternative to ‘Third World.” Today, however, it is employed in a post-national sense to address spaces and peoples negatively impacted by contemporary capitalist globalization. Critical scholarship under this rubric includes studying power and racialization within global capitalism in ways that transcend the traditional nation-state as the unit of comparative analysis or relations among subaltern groups across national, linguistic, racial, and ethnic lines. The course is divided into three blocks. In the first, we offer an introductory bibliography for those new to the concept and its history. In the second, we draw on scholarship from the fields of African Studies, Anthropology and others to offer students insights into relevant theories. In the third, we invite an inquiry into existing methodological approaches, with students encouraged to discover and share new methods of relevance to their particular research topics. In all three blocks, guest speakers from the Global South will be invited to reflect and engage with students. |
Lernziele | Participants will read theories by Global South scholars working in and across disciplines and develop a theoretical understanding of the Global South as a critical concept. In addition, they will be exposed to a diverse range of research methodologies that have practical benefits for those working within the Global South and those interested in developing a comprehensive understanding of epistemic geographies. |
