69005-01 - Exkursion: Living Together, Apart: Transnational Attachments, Intimacies, and Kinship (10 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Michelle Engeler (michelle.engeler@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This two-semester course addresses 'living together, apart'. It starts in September 2023, includes fieldwork in January and February 2024, and ends in May 2024. Based on a broad understanding of migration, family and (de-)kinning practices, the course aims at researching transnational attachments, intimacies, and kinship, predominantly in (or around) Basel.
Lernziele The overall goal of the course is to train and deepen the practice of ethnographic research methods. Thus, all course attendees will familiarize themselves with research approaches in social anthropology and acquire skills in the analysis of (transnational) social realities. In addition, participants will reflect on their own positionality while recognising (im)mobility regimes and legal frameworks shaping the making and unmaking of transnational kinship. In this process, we will also critically discuss normative perceptions of the family, power relations and privileged migration.

To be ready for the field, all participants will during the autumn semester 2023 develop a research proposal, apply qualitative research methods during fieldwork periods in January and February 2024 and conclude the two-semester course in the spring semester 2024 with a report.

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen The number of participants is limited to 10 people. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study. Depending on your research focus/location an average knowledge of German might be helpful. Furthermore, basic knowledge in qualitative research methods and some experiences in doing fieldwork are strongly recommended.
