Inhalt | In the former places of work of the Basel Mission in the south of Ghana the traces of the mission are omnipresent until today. Schools and hospitals, cemeteries, churches, former residences of the missionaries and plantations are part of the material heritage of the BM. The mission is also a central part of family histories in Ghana, and the spiritual self-understanding of many communities is closely interwoven with the heritage of the BM. This tradition is valued differently. In light of current decolonial debates, missionary work has been seen as complicit with the project of colonialism. However, from the local perspective, the legacy of the BM appears more complex. This one-week excursion through southern Ghana is a collaboration between Unibas and the Akrofi-Christaller-Institute (ACI) in Akropong, and the Department of History of the University of Ghana to explore the joint material and immaterial heritage of the BM. Students from Ghana and from Basel will work in teams to undertake their own research projects that involve archival research, observation, and oral history interviews. Students will write a research paper (which can ideally be the starting point of an MA thesis) and contribute to a joint website. Participating students must have taken the preparatory seminar “What’s God Got to Do with It” (fall term 2023). Also, they will be asked to contribute 300 CHF to their own travel expenses (reductions can be granted) and take care of the necessary medical preparations (vaccinations, prophylaxis). |
