Inhalt Successful innovation on a product, process and service level is of crucial importance for companies in today’s fast changing market environment as is the ability to adopt and transform one’s business model. Nowadays firms not ony face the question of «how to change the business» but even more fundamental the question of «how to run the business».
Building on the core models of innovation management this course introduces the concepts and methodologies of business model transformation. It analyzes structural and organizational aspects of disruptive innovation and highlights different organizational forms for the implementation of transformational innovation. The most important challenges innovative firms are facing will be explored as well as the innovation management toolset. The course is organized around a series of up-to-date innovation topics as open innovation, innovation platforms and social innovation and will also involve the practical application of the frameworks, concepts and principle learnt to real case problems. One lesson is dedicated to the participation in a start-up simulation game (organized by the innovation office of the university of Basle)
Lernziele 1. To gain the analytical competencies and problem solving skills to understand the mechanisms of the innovation process and the process of business model transformation.
2. To learn models, tools and methods to manage innovation within organizations and through innovation networks.
3. To develop critical and analytical reasoning about firms’ innovation management capacity.
4. To analyze and solve problems that arise in organizations that work on innovative projects.
5. To learn models and tools to manage the change linked to innovation with a focus on social innovation.
6. To learn how to prepare and present case studies on innovation management and business model transformation.
Literatur There is no required single text; instead, students should read a variety of different materials for the different subjects including:

Hinweise zur Prüfung The course is based on both theoretical lectures and the discussion of case studies and other empirical materials. It requires the active participation of students in class discussions. Students will be assigned one case studie and one scientific paper (both group work) to read, prepare and present in class. Presentations are graded and account for 30% (case study) and 20% (scientific paper) of the final result. The final exam (accounting for 50% of the final result) comprises all material presented in the course including case studies, readings, supplementary material and handouts.
