72927-01 - Seminar: ELF-Aware Learning and Teaching in English Second Language Acquisition (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2024
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Zeynep Köylü (zeynep.koylu@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This BA/MA seminar is a survey of English as a lingua franca (ELF) aware learning and teaching of English as a second language. We will look into the notion of ELF and how it is defined, clarified, and delineated in the field. The current SLA literature highlights nativelike ultimate attainment prospects of scholars, practitioners, and learners although English is the mostly spoken contact language in the world, allowing for much “deviation” from most target forms. We will delve into issues of native-speaker-oriented norms, curricula, testing and assessment traditions, and overall attitudes in the field towards ELF-users, all of which results from these stakeholders’ desire to imitate English native speakers (Bayyurt & Sifakis, 2015). Thus, we will discuss the role of ELF in reshaping these stakeholders’ prejudice towards nativelike ultimate attainment expectations through an ELF-aware pedagogy. To better grasp how prevalent native-speaker-oriented-norms are in SLA, you will have a chance to collect data and run a mini research project as small groups. We will also investigate the current implementations of ELF-aware teaching and learning in Europe. Overall, this seminar aims to equip students with the tools to understand the current beliefs of different stakeholders in English L2 learning and teaching and how these can be reshaped with the help of an ELF-aware pedagogy.
