72926-01 - Seminar: Advisory Discourse (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2024
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt In this course we will focus on language practices in the area of counselling, advising and information-giving. We will look at different methodological approaches to the study of face-to-face and written data (for example, doctor-patient interaction, advice columns, online fora, youtube tutorials, etc.). We will also investigate how the ideologies underlying the counselling and advising practices influence language usage and cross-fertilize the different practices and text types. Students are expected to participate actively in workshops and to give presentations on assigned readings and their own small research projects.
Lernziele At the end of this course, students should
(1) know and can apply the key terminology of the field of discourse analysis,
(2) have acquired knowledge about the speech activities of advising, counselling and information-giving,
(3) have read the assigned texts critically, and judged the introduced studies with respect to the methods employed,
(4) have gained research experience by conducting small studies of their own.
Literatur Texts will be made available in the ADAM course folder.
