52095-01 - Proseminar: Noir (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2024
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Peter Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Less a mode, more an atmosphere, "noir" appears in many media from literature, to moving and still images, to dress. This proseminar will address some key artefacts, treating noir as a very broad genre, developing an approach that is informed by theory and matched to examples. Taking Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" (in both literary and film forms) as a starting point for determining what noir might be, the course will consider how noir envelops various symbolic orders, reflects aspects of our cultural world, and measures rights and wrongs. Other material will be taken from further examples of Hollywood noir, neo-noir, and female noir. A specific list of novels and films will be provided before the start of term.

Lernziele You will learn about the genre noir, and approach the phenomenon from both theoretical and case-study perspectives. You will learn further about analytical tools and their application to film, photography, and literature. You will have the opportunity to write a proseminar paper on the topic.
