Inhalt | This two-semester course of the MA Anthropology at the University of Basel delves into the dynamic landscape of the “Young Swiss Diaspora”, examining the multifaceted and entangled everyday lives of postmigrant youths, mixed/third culture individuals, and second-generation children who contribute to, influence, and navigate the fabric of contemporary (urban) Switzerland. Thus, through an ethnographic lens, this course explores the complexities inherent in navigating terrains of (de-)connection, plural affiliations, and community across borders, reflecting the diversity of contemporary Swiss society. Participating students will engage with qualitative research methodologies to critically question notions of youth, nationality and diasporic (be-)longing. In the preparatory semester (HS 2024), students expand on their skills in anthropological methods, proposal writing, and data management techniques. Engaging with relevant literature on diaspora and youth, participants craft and present their own research proposals, laying the groundwork for their individual fieldwork endeavours. The main fieldwork phase unfolds in January and February 2025, during which students conduct independent research projects, with periodic meetings to facilitate collaboration and peer feedback. Upon completion of fieldwork, the spring term (FS 2025) focuses on data analysis workshops and discussions on ethnographic writing and research communication. Through these sessions, students refine their analytical skills and prepare to present their findings, culminating in the production of a comprehensive research report. |
