Inhalt The Universities of Basel and Strasbourg share a dynamic body of research on funerary practices in the Theban region during the last thousand years of the history of polytheistic Egypt. This is reflected particularly in the archaeological excavations in the Asasif, in the vicinity of the tomb of Padiamenemope (TT 33), work on the temple of Deir el-Medina, and a wide-ranging study of the local funerary literature of the Graeco-Roman period. The organisers of this course are keen to share their joint and complementary interests with master's and doctoral students and to develop a constructive dialogue about their practices, methods and results.
The teaching is therefore based on the methods of archaeology and papyrology, two complementary disciplines that are rarely taught together, as they belong to separate training courses. Through case studies based on the organisers’ and guest lecturers’ ongoing research, the joint seminar will give students an opportunity to discover the most recent work on funerary practices in the Theban region, as well as to learn about and experiment with the original methodes and processes used in their projects.

The course programme is as follows:
Online introductory module on 27 February.
Study day in Strasbourg on 6 March.
Study day in Basel on 28 March.
Presentation of students' work and feedback in Basel and in Strasbourg on 25 and 30 April.

A detailed programme will be provided to participants.
Lernziele Knowledge of classical and current methods in archaeology and papyrology.
Experience of working in museums.
Expericence of interdisciplinary dialogue and interactions with lecturers and guest speakers.
Experience of case study work.
Literatur The bibliography will be provided at the introductory session.

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen This course is aimed primarily at doctoral and master's students.
Previous knowledge of ancient Egyptian is desirable.
To encourage exchanges, English will be preferred.
