Inhalt | This master project is focused on the understanding of specific phobias from a multi-modal perspective. Studies have shown that specific phobias have a point prevalence up to 27% among women and 12 % among men (Fredrikson et al., 1996). To date, instruments used to understand specific phobias have mostly - but not only - been self-reports (interviews or questionnaires). A main aim of the Research Domain Criteria framework (see Cuthbert, 2014) is to extend the modalities of investigation in mental illnesses research. The proposed master thesis topic is grounded in such an approach and aims at exploring the opportunities of virtual reality and machine learning in this area. Examples of possible modalities under scrutiny include: behavioral (e.g., movement), cognitive-emotional (e.g., questionnaire instruments), and physiological data (e.g., electrodermal activity). Enrolled students will first acquire knowledge on related topics and will participate in developing research questions. They will also participate in running systematic review of the literature. It is planned that students will work together until this stage. Then they will work on their master thesis independently. |
