| Inhalt | In this course we will be looking at the international law frameworks related to "poverty in all its forms" and considering how national legal systems respond to their obligations. The course is structured around three main issues that are debated globally: how to define poverty; how to eliminate poverty through economic growth; how to empower those in poverty. A fourth part of the course takes up alternative approaches to poverty, including the trends to "criminalize" it and the idea of approaching it through a lens of vulnerability. The class will require reading primary and secondary legal literature but also a willingness to think about how legal systems and societal values interact. Students should be willing to engage in informed discussions. |
| Lernziele | Students will understand the different approaches to evaluating extreme poverty and inequality, and be able to explain how international law rules impact on low income states and impoverished individuals. Students will be able to recognize how domestic legal systems and international law interact in the areas of poverty reduction efforts. |
