Inhalt | Come on a journey of discovery and watch history in the making! This course will engage with the literature and culture of Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a small British Overseas Territory at the Southern tip of the Iberian peninsula, ceded to Britain in perpetuity in 1713. After Brexit, Gibraltar’s future has been hotly debated, and its distinctive hybrid culture is under threat, as is its 'llanito' language, a mixture of English and Spanish. While the Gibraltarian establishment tends to be jingoistic, more British than the British, there are Gibraltarian authors, both in Gibraltar and abroad, who engage with Gibraltar’s colonial history and its residual colonialism. In this course, we will read and discuss some of this literature and explore Britain’s imperial legacy. We will learn about 'llanito' and discuss work by such authors as M.G. Sanchez, Giordano Durante, Gabriel Moreno, Jonathan Teuma and Rebecca Calderon. It is not necessary to speak Spanish for this course, but if you do, all the better. I am planning to organize a small conference in 2025 with Gibraltarian authors, in which students will be able to participate. |
