| Inhalt | This course dives into the world of regional powerhouses and discovers what makes them tick! It offers a dynamic introduction to the European Union (EU) alongside other major regional organisations in Africa, the Middle East, South America, Asia, and the Pacific. In the course we will explore the key theories behind regional integration and gain the tools to analyse how these regional (political) organizations operate and evolve. By comparing the EU with influential regional international organisations like the ASEAN, the African Union, the Arab League, and MERCOSUR, the participants will uncover the political and economic forces, preconditions and institutions that shape regional cooperation across the globe. | Lernziele | - Develop a theoretical understanding: gain a solid grasp of key theories explaining why and how regions integrate politically and economically. Gain the ability to apply the theories to real-world examples, providing a better understanding. - Analyse the EU and other regional organisations: Get to know the major regional powerhouses world-wide and develop the ability to critically analyse the structure, purpose, and functioning of these major regional organizations such as the EU, ASEAN, African Union, Arab League, and MERCOSUR. - Build a broader perspective: develop an understanding for diverse forms of regional cooperation, from economic unions to political alliances, and what drives these variations. Broaden your understanding of global governance by studying how regions collaborate to address shared challenges and opportunities. |

| Bemerkungen | Attention: All Seminars will be graded in the Department of Political Science. Grading scale 6.0 to 1.0, whereupon 4.0 is a pass. The number of participants will be limited. The places are assigned according to date of enrollment and subject of study. Priority will be given to students of Political Science. - Hinweis/Note: Zusätzlich zu den 5 Sitzungsterminen wird es noch eine ganztägige Ausflug nach Strassbourg ins Europaparlament geben. Kosten sind selbst zu tragen. Termin steht noch nicht fest./ In addition to the 5 sessions, there will be a full-day trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Costs are to be paid by the participants. Date not yet fixed. |
