Semester Frühjahrsemester 2025

Inhalt The Nobel Peace Prize 2024 went to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyō (Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, 日本原水爆被害者団体協議会), which is a group formed in 1956 representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In this seminar, we study the conferral of the Nobel Peace Prize and Nihon Hidankyō as a case for an interdisciplinary approach to Japanese Global Studies. Taken as a global case, we examine the media coverage of the event, the historical background of the Nobel Peace Prize and the politics that go with it and adopt an International Relations perspective to discuss proposals for a world free of nuclear arms before turning to philosophical questions such as to whether or not nuclear arms are morally acceptable. Taken as a Japanese case, we turn to the histories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and conceptualize Nihon Hidankyō as a memory keeper, a national social movement and an international norm giver. This brings us to issues of international law and politics and the statement of one of the Nihon Hidankyō prize winners that he thought that “those fighting hard for peace in Gaza would deserve it,” comparing the situation in Gaza to “Japan 80 years ago.”
