| Inhalt | This course will introduce the general research process by presenting the pros and cons of choosing different research designs. The main focus will be on conducting semi-structured qualitative interviews, including defining research question(s), selecting interviewees, as well as designing, recording, transcribing and coding interviews. The course has two parts that take place in parallel: 1. Individual & theoretical project In the beginning of the semester, students will develop their own research idea and pitch that topic in front of their peers to get feedback and refine it. During the semester, the different building blocks of the research proposal are presented and students are expected to hand-in the assignment at the end of the semester. The goal of the proposal is to learn to make the case for your research topic for an academic audience. The proposal could be a good preliminary exercise for a future master thesis. 2. Group and practical project During the semester, the different steps to conduct research are presented, and some time will be dedicated to training practical skills related to qualitative methods. More specifically, divided into groups, students will work on a pre-determined case study and design a semi-structured interview, conduct, record and transcribe interviews, develop coding categories and practice coding in a software. |
| Lernziele | The objectives of this course are twofold: Theoretical - Gain an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of different research designs in order to select the best data collection and analysis approach for your research question. - Understand the formal steps for conducting qualitative interviews and analyzing your data. - Learn how to write a research proposal and make the case for what you are doing. Practical - Learn to collect qualitative data (designing interview, recording and transcribing) and practice the different steps involved in the analysis of your qualitative data (coding). - Train and improve working in groups as well as presenting in front of peers. - Learn what tools (websites, software, programs) are out there that can help you with your research process. |

| Bemerkungen | Note that this course is not an introductory methods course but rather an applied qualitative methods course. Preliminary knowledge about research methods is recommended (research design, qualitative methods, quantitative methods). “Einführung in die Empirische Sozialforschung” or an equivalent course should have been taken previously. The maximum number of students is limited to 12. If the number of students exceeds the available places for this course, the spots will be allocated following the enrolment order. Participation is mandatory for the two seminars where students will present their research ideas (13.10.2025 & 20.10.2025). A maximum of 1 excused absence is allowed for the rest of the classes. |
