| Inhalt | Mexico: Cultures of Colonial Conversion The 1521 conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlán marked the beginning of roughly three centuries of European rule over vast areas of the American continents. These initial ruptures were followed by complex processes of cultural entanglement between Indigenous populations and Spanish colonizers. Much of the interactions of these groups hinged on the question of conversion, a capacious notion that might be taken to understand not only the imposition of new religious norms but also the transformation of forms of governance, collectivity, and ways of thinking. In these processes, objects played a central role. This nine-day excursion to Mexico City and its surroundings tracks the violent attempts of subjugation of native populations under Spanish rule by investigating the ways that images, objects, materials, and spaces mediated between epistemic structures and belief systems, transforming Indigenous and European modes of representation and cultural practices. On-site visits of the cathedrals at urban centers of colonial power, mission complexes, rural churches, and sanctuaries of miracle-working images venerated to this day, as well as some of the most important museums in Latin America will provide insights into the ways in which architecture, painting, sculpture, and other forms and media of representation became sites of encounter and conflict. Paired with close visual analysis and attention to spaces and materials, our discussions will explore questions of colonial imposition, negotiation and resistance, and how material culture choreographed devotion and structured social life, memory, and power. |
| Bemerkungen | Die Exkursion findet voraussichtlich statt am: 5.-14. Juni 2026; Vorbereitungssitzung ist am Dienstag, 31.3. (18-20 Uhr). Die Teilnahme an der Exkursion Mexiko setzt das Belegen des Seminars 77861 "Die Kunst Lateinamerikas in der Epoche des Kolonialismus voraus, die auch von Professor Hyman angeboten wird. Beschränkte Teilnehmendenzahl. Anmeldung direkt beim Dozierenden. |
| Teilnahmevoraussetzungen | Die Exkursion richtet sich in erster Linie an Bachelorstudierende der Kunstgeschichte. Die Teilnehmer/innenzahl ist beschränkt. Belegen über Online Services (services.unibas.ch) notwendig. Bei Überbelegung erhalten BA-Studierende der Kunstgeschichte Vorrang bei der Platzvergabe (Erfüllung Curriculum). Die Teilnahme an der Exkursion Mexiko setzt das Belegen des Seminars 77861 "Die Kunst Lateinamerikas in der Epoche des Kolonialismus voraus, die auch von Professor Hyman angeboten wird. |
