78015-01 - Vorlesung mit Übungen: One Health Across Time (3 KP)

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2026
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Kathleen Walker-Meikle (kathleen.walker-meikle@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The holistic One Health framework recognises that the health of humans, animals and the wider environment) are closely linked and independent. It has been championed by the WHO and other international organisations as an integrated approach to understanding disease transmission and optimising health at all levels (individual, population and ecosystem). Students will examine the challenges of introducing a historical perspective into the One Health concept when evaluating disease dynamics and roles of animals, humans, and the environment in epidemics. Many re-emerging diseases, which have afflicted humans for millennia, require the integration of a long-term perspective for their characterization, prediction and eradication. This course will also address One Health approaches today to mitigate and address issues including zoonotic disease, food security, and anti-microbial resistance. Through a series of case studies, students will consider these new methods and tools for a systemic approach to health, by integrating both scientific and socio-cultural data.
Lernziele - By the end of this course students will be able think critically about the concept of One Health as a unity of multiple practices that work together locally, nationally, and globally to help achieve optimal health for people, animals, and the environment.
- Students will be able to evaluate the possibility of applying a One Health framework historically, along with contemporary usages when addressing public health and disease control policy, and the challenges and benefits this might bring.
- By understanding the fundamentals, key methods and topics of the One Health approach, they will be able to evaluate the added value of implementing One Health in a variety of activities and sectors.
