| Inhalt | This course seeks to provide you with the skills, knowledge and sensitivity required to understand and evaluate global business opportunities and challenges by exploring the unique competitive, political and social environments in which international business takes place. We will explore how firms respond to the strategic demands of the global business environment and how firms compete in the global business environment. We will consider when and why crossing national borders creates value for firms and where and how firms should locate their foreign activities, including differences and benefits across several foreign entry modes. The overarching goal of this course is to enable you to develop and fine-tune skills in analyzing the strategic choices of firms within both global and local pressures across different countries in the international business environment. After taking this course, you will gain: 1.) A set of conceptual and practical tools that can be used to navigate the often contradictory and ambiguous mass of information about globalization and the international business environment (including, at a minimum, the cultural, administrative, geographic and economic differences). 2.) A set of analytic frameworks that can be used to critically evaluate multinational corporation strategic imperatives and organizational challenges and country differences. 3.) Diagnosis, recommendation and communication skills from applying course frameworks and tools across multiple case examples, discussions and written assignments. Part of strategizing involves sound judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. An equally important part is the ability to communicate and defend your ideas. To help develop all of these skills, we will use a variety of teaching tools, including class discussions of readings, assignments where you apply course frameworks to cases we then discuss in class and discussions where we compare and contrast practical applications of course frameworks. Ultimately, I am looking for you to show me your knowledge of and ability to apply course materials in your assignments and final exam. |

| Hinweise zur Prüfung | Course attendance is compulsory. Attendance and good preparation are prerequisites for being a valuable participant in the class. You are expected to prepare for and attend every class and participate actively. Grading will be based on: Group (in-class) Assignments 10% Individual Assignments 30% Individual Final Examination 40% Class Participation 20% YOUR WORKLOAD: Class discussion will involve in-depth analyses of the assigned case materials and preparation for each class is essential. There are case questions that are listed in the syllabus for the cases and course materials we will discuss. (You should be prepared to answer listed questions for each day prior to the start of each class.) A productive learning environment is created from the active engagement of all class members - we all share responsibility for the quality of our class. Your assignments consist of both group and individual assignments: In-Class Group Homework Assignments: The intent of group assignment is to help you to learn more about how to apply the frameworks and analytic tools we will be discussing in class by talking about the course materials and assignments with each other in groups. There will be three in-class group assignments where students will turn in their applications of frameworks to course materials before we discuss the case materials. These assignments are not worth a lot of your final grade – they are intended to be learning exercises. Class participation counts for twenty percent of your grade. I am expecting you to read all assigned materials and to actively participate in each class. The case questions that are listed in the syllabus are intended to help you focus your thoughts prior to class so that you will be able to participate in a meaningful way (and I am looking for comments that help develop the discussion in a meaningful way). Individual Assignments: There are two individual assignments. The first assignment involves applying the country framework we discussed in class to two countries of your choosing. The second individual assignment involves an in-class, written analysis of case materials. I will be asking you to apply the frameworks we have been discussing for the seven prior days to a new case setting. I will provide you with a short reading (no more than 8 pages) on a multinational firm we have not already discussed in class and I will ask you to analyze the information you have using course frameworks. After everyone turns in this assignment, we will discuss this case. Final examination: The final examination will be held on 24 July 2026. This will be a closed-book, individual, examination that will ask for written responses to several questions about materials we have covered throughout the two weeks. |
