Christina Digeser (christina.digeser@unibas.ch)
Christa Tobler (christa.tobler@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn) |
| Inhalt | The course provides an introduction into the basics of European Union (EU) law, including notably: 1) The origins of the European Union as an international organisation; 2) Its consitutional principles; 3) The special nature of European Union law as compared to more traditional public international law; 4) The particular role of the European Court of Justice for the legal system of the European Union; 5) The European Union's internal market and competition law. The course will also touch on recent or on-going developments. Important note: This is a flipped classroom course with elements of blended learning! See below, under "Bemerkungen". |
| Lernziele | 1) Students understand the basics of European Union law. 2) Students are able to place news items related to the EU in the framework of what they learn in the course, and they are able to reflect critically on them. |
| Literatur | There are many good textbooks on EU law which the students can use. In most class meetings, we will work actively with the following materials, notably with the charts part: Christa Tobler/Jacques Beglinger, Essential EU Law in Charts and Text, 2 volumes, 6th edition, Budapest:ORAC 2026 (ISBN of the new edition not known yet); see generally about the books also www.eur-charts.eu. A certain number of the Charts and Text books is available for use by the students in the "Semesterapparat" in the library of the Europainstitut/Institute for European Global Studies. There is no obligation to buy the books. For those who wish to buy private copties of the Chart and Text books, a limited number of copies of the books is available for direct purchase through the secretariat of the Europainstitut, at the price of 60 CHF. Please bring the exact price in cash. The books can also be purchased directly from the publisher or through the Brussels bookshop Librairie européenne (once the latter will have the new edition). |
| Bemerkungen | Important: This is a flipped classroom course with elements of blended learning. Following an introduction, students learn themselves with the help of the course materials. Students meet regularly with the assistant to the course to discuss questions they may have on the topic and to do exercises. At crucial points in the course, meetings will be held with the professor. Both the assistant and the professor are available for online discussions throughout the course. In the framework of the flipped classroom/blended learning approach, it is essential that, before coming to class, students have done the preparatory work. Accordingly, they should look up on ADAM what needs to be done even before the very first meeting (!) and prepare accordingly. The dates and times of this course will be published in due time through ADAM (course materials). |
