| Inhalt | This Einführungskurs provides an introduction into the history of women, gender, and sexuality, focusing on the range of methodological and theoretical approaches used by historians who study these themes in twentieth century Eastern Europe. Over the course of the semester, we will discuss key themes emerging from recent historiography. Starting in 1918, we will discuss issues such as women’s political rights, nationalism and the politicisation of reproduction, women’s experiences during the Second World War and the Holocaust. In post-war history, we will address themes such as women’s labour force participation, state-socialist women’s organisations, as well as everyday life experiences of domesticity and intimacy, paying particular attention to questions of gender and sexual identity. The course will finish in the 1990s, discussing the role sexuality played in post-socialist transformations in Eastern Europe. Methodologically, the EK introduces students to a range of sources and methods used by historians of gender and sexuality. We will study archival documents, literary sources, press articles, oral history interviews, memoirs, material culture artifacts, as well as documentary and feature films. Over the course of the semester we will also develop study and research skills such as literature research, reference and bibliography management, working with digital tools, public presentations, and writing academic abstracts. The course will be held in English and all course materials (including primary sources) will be provided in English. The EK will include excursions and a "digital module" in November/December. |
