Inhalt In this module we will build an interest in understanding how teamwork is organized in training activities of firebrigades. The work of firefighters is relying heavily on several members working together in a team, but also on several teams working together and coordinating their actions. This makes of the activities of firebrigades an interesting environment to investigate the real-time organization of teamwork.
The notion of teamwork has become central for a variety of professional settings – from trades to offices and also more generally within institutions, referring to different understandings of how people work together. Based on video-recordings of real trainings of firefighters, this module will specifically investigate how teamwork is organized in a professional activity where participants heavily depend on each other. In other terms, we will look at team-work in action.
From a Conversation Analytic perspective, the first part of the module will focus on how teamwork is a locally organized interactional phenomenon. We will see how teamwork is sequentially organized, and how it is fundamentally built from the coordination of several courses of action. As linguists and professionals of communication we will be especially interested in how firefighters are able to coordinate their actions under difficult circumstances: Wearing protective gear and respiratory protection creates serious communicational trouble – firefighters have difficulties to talk, hear, see, and feel each other. Hence, we will be interested not only in the verbal, but also – and especially – in the embodied and material dimensions of interaction.
The second part of the module will focus on a reflection about how conceptualizations developed in interactional studies, and especially in multimodal EMCA, become helpful for describing the complexities of the environments in which professionals of firebrigades are expected to work in a coordinated way. These reflections will take into consideration the notion of ‘communication’ as members of firebrigades understand it, and will aim to propose a more comprehensive description of what communication – or interaction – in the work of firefighters is.
Based on videos of trainings for firefighters, the module offers an occasion (a) to investigate how one specific emergency service trains to organize collective action in such a way to be able to function in real emergencies, and (b) to analyze, describe and understand the fundamental role of interactional resources in the organization of coordinated action and teamwork, c) to understand what linguists can offer to firebrigades and how the latter appreciate this kind of intervention (based on actual interventions among the fire brigade studied). The module will have a multilingual character: The teaching will be given in English, videodata will be in French, and every person is invited to express themselves in the language they are most comfortable in (German, English, French).
