80555-01 - Seminar: Generative KI im Bereich psychische Gesundheit und Psychotherapie – Anwendung, Wirksamkeit und ethische Herausforderungen (1 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2026
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Smeralda Senn (smeralda.senn@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The workshop is conducted by the external lecturer Charlotte Blease, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Participatory eHealth & Health Data Research Group, Department of Women's and Children's Health, Uppsala University (Sweden).

Participants will critically examine the rapidly evolving integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in psychotherapy and mental health care. This course progresses through the entire research and adoption lifecycle: from conceptual justification and efficacy research to implementation challenges and profound ethical considerations. Students will explore topics including AI-assisted documentation (e.g., automated progress notes), AI as a supplemental intervention tool, the changing therapist-client relationship, and the sustainability of AI-augmented care models. A key focus will be on developing a critical, evidence-based framework for evaluating these technologies. Students are encouraged to share experiences, reflect on their own research's potential intersection with AI, and collaboratively address the novel challenges and opportunities this technology presents.
Lernziele Learning objectives: Upon completion of this colloquium, students will be able to:
1. Critically analyze the theoretical justifications for adopting generative AI tools in various psychotherapeutic contexts.
2. Articulate a balanced overview of the potential benefits (e.g., efficiency, accessibility) and risks (e.g., bias, dehumanization) associated with AI in therapy.
3. Identify and evaluate the core ethical, regulatory, legal, and practical problems surrounding AI implementation, including privacy, accountability, and equity.
4. Develop and present a well-reasoned position on a specific AI-in-mental-health topic, integrating scientific evidence and ethical reasoning.
5. Foster collaboration by engaging in scholarly debate, respectfully challenging assumptions, and considering diverse perspectives on the future of therapy.
Bemerkungen The workshop is offered by the doctoral program Health & Interventions (HI-PSY) and counts towards the Research Content and/or Research Colloquium (new regulations effective from 2026) curriculum area of the PhD program HI-PSY.

Places will be given according to this selection criteria:
1) PhD students from the doctoral program HI-PSY
2) PhD students of other specializations of the Faculty of Psychology
3) PhD students of other faculties of the University of Basel

HI-PSY rules for withdrawal, absence, or partial course attendance:
If you cannot attend a workshop that you have signed up for, please cancel your course registration as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to smeralda.senn@unibas.ch. This will allow other PhD students interested in the course to move up from the waiting list. After the university’s official registration period has ended, cancelled course will be assessed with NE. Course registrations can be cancelled until one week before the workshops begins. In the case of late cancellations, participants will not be considered for course registration in the next three months of the lecture periods and will be removed from the registration list of any course they have signed up during these three upcoming months of the lecture periods.

If an urgent, unforeseeable, or inevitable event before or during the course prevents a participant from attending, a written and substantiated withdrawal request that includes appropriate documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) must be submitted to smeralda.senn@unibas.ch within two days of the workshop and without being prompted. The program director decides on the approval of the withdrawal request.

ECTS-points are awarded only for 100% course attendance.
