80660-01 - Seminar: Gender in Workplace Discourse (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2026
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Joelle Loew (joelle.loew@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt In this course, we explore the topic of gender in workplace discourse. We begin by untangling some of the theoretical, methodological, and conceptual challenges linked to researching gender in linguistics. We apply this knowledge to different types of data and workplace contexts, focusing primarily on English data. Special attention will be paid to the concept of new work, or agile ways of working, and its complex relationship with gender and power structures. We explore the contributions linguistic analysis can make to understanding and addressing persisting workplace (in)equalities, such as issues linked to notions of professionalism and leadership, and reflect on the implications for students’ own professional practice.
Lernziele By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Assess the main theoretical bases of researching gender in workplace discourse
2. Critically reflect on conceptual and methodological challenges of such research
3. Analyse different types of data from various workplace contexts, including agile IT
4. Apply this knowledge to their own (future) professional practice
Literatur All course readings will be made available on ADAM.
